Lemon Squares Bound

Lemon Squares Bound by shanleytulip
Lemon Squares Bound, a photo by shanleytulip on Flickr.

I had a looooong day of jury duty today and decided to fully dork out and take a quilt with me to bind. I finished up the Lemon Squares quilt. I've just got to dig up the label from somewhere around here. If I can trick someone into holding up for me this weekend, I'll post a full picture soon.

Hmm, that seems to be a common thread on posts lately. It might be time to dig out my pulleys too and set up a photo spot. Maybe on my new front porch, that should fancy up the neighborhood.

You can kinda see in this picture that I decided to try pebbling in the white spaces. On the yellow squares I stitched in some lemons. Cause I take quilt names literally.

I'm nervously waiting for the quilt in the washer. Hopefully the bright red stripes on the back stay on the back. I've put in two Color Catchers and we'll see how it goes in another hour or so.

It's quilted all over with a rcoketships, stars and planets pantograph which went with the design really well. I had just enough of one of the blue prints to bind the whole thing and was able to finish up the hand sewing this weekend since I didn't actually move as I had expected. Back to projects put on hold and organizing my sewing room now.

Robot Backing

Go Crazy Go! by shanleytulip
Robot Backing!, a photo by shanleytulip on Flickr.

Thanks to a sewing day with the San Diego Modern Quilt Guild, I was able to finish the backing for the robot quilt.

The colored spots on the label are the teachers and kid's fingerprints. Then their names and personalities were added. It turned out super cute (I had nothing to do with it).

The blue and the red stripes are flannel so it will be snuggly.

I think he'll like it!

Rolling Along

Trimmings by shanleytulip

I meant to post this all week but other things got in the way. Here are the trimmings from 42 blocks which were finished up at a sewing meetup last Sunday.

There was plenty of room to lay things out although I didn’t take up all the tables I could have.

I stacked them back up for the ride home since 4 hours goes by way too quick with the chatty set up that we have there.

Here's the layout that I finalized and sewed together on Monday night. I was irritated to find that there are two similar big prints of robots walking robot dogs in the same row. Luckily I was reminded that we generally walk dogs in twos around here so it makes sense.

Now I'm ready for the label and will piece the back with some flannel and the labels made by his classmates.

Saturday Status

Saturday Report by shanleytulip

Here are the Robots and Rockets as of Saturday morning. As you can see, I got sidetracked into finishing another project. It's coming along though and we've a plan for the label on the back from his classmates.

Over halfway

Holler if you think I've got too many of a certain color so far. I will mix them up better in the final layout.

I've already received the rocket pantograph for quilting from Anne Bright (annebright.com). Fantastic service!!

Just a quick update on today's blocks. I've got them up on my design wall to show the width and length.

Robots and Rocketships Blocks

Robots and Rockets Blocks, originally uploaded by shanleytulip.

Ok, you might all see more of this quilt then normal because I'm making it for a preschool class to gift to one of their classmates who has some health concerns right now. Since I only know one of the moms, I thought that having lots of postings might help with the coordination of the whole project.

Here are the first 8 blocks of the quilt out of a needed 42. Not too bad for a start. I've got pieces for many more cut and hope to get it organized tomorrow.

The blocks may look vaguely familiar because I'm using the Lemon Squares pattern again. I was a little nervous not to use a solid cream color with it to calm it down a little but I think it's all working together so far.

P.S. If I have any visitors from the class, please click on the tag "Robots" to see all related posts.

Lemon Squares Back

Lemon Squares Back, originally uploaded by shanleytulip.

There are 37 other things that I should be doing but this morning I pieced the backing for the Lemon Squares quilt. It's made up for random widths of orange and yellow flannel. And by random I mean that I did lots of math on a scrap of paper until I had a big enough back planned. And then I carefully cut and stacked the strips. It seems to have worked out. After I get back from vacation (and the machine has 2 weeks at the spa) I'll come up with a quilting plan.

Lemon Rind

Lemon Rind, originally uploaded by shanleytulip.

These are the trimmings from my Lemon Squares quilt (top done this morning). Clearly these must be lemon rinds then.

I've now got 3 tops waiting for me to finish up the twin size Ticker Tape. Only about 30 inches to go on that. I can do it. I can.

Lemon Squares

Lemon Squares, originally uploaded by shanleytulip.

Here is the result of cutting up my yellow/orange/pink scraps following this pattern over at the lovely Fresh Lemons blog. I shorted a couple of strips on the last 3 blocks so will need to redo those before finishing up I know the picture is kinda dark but I'm pretty pleased with how it's turning out and wanted to lay it out real quick on the floor. I still have plenty of scraps left in all 3 bins but at least they close a little easier. Most of the sewing I did at the sewing meetup on Sunday. If you're in the San Diego area and want to spread out and sew, we get together the first Saturday of the month (except this March). Email me for details!

Here's a closer up too. And I won't need to buy any fabric to complete this one. Although I did steal the white on white from another project so will have to find some more of that next month.

Ready

Ready, originally uploaded by shanleytulip.
I'm all ready to go tomorrow for our local quilting meetup. And yes, I'm starting a whole new project. I've cut up my yellow, orange and pink scraps for making a lemon squares quilt from this pattern.

I'd say that this is in response to a need for a break from the cold winter weather but in reality it's been all sunshine and roses so far this year. Literally. My roses never stop blooming. And trust me, I don't try to help them along. They're just stubborn.

And yes, for those wondering, my schnauzer was right, I'm just starting to feel better.
