Turtle Quilt for Heidi

Final first quarter finish pictures coming right up.

This is the quilt top i gifted on Christmas and then brought back home with me to finish. As I mentioned, I'm quite classy.


Heidi officiated at my sister's wedding last year and did a great job. My sister wanted to do a special quilt as thanks so I got to work. I used Prince Charming by Tula Pink mostly since the turtles were perfect for Heidi. The pattern is Crazy Nine Patch from Oh Fransson again.


I quilted it with what I'm calling currents with waves. It fits with the top pretty well. The backing took about 42 emails to pick. I tried doing a pieced back, started here. It went really wrong so is wadded up in the closet now.
I may rescue it someday. So then the emailing of flannel pics started flying up to my sister. We finally settled on this blue stripe by Valori Wells. The colors match much better than this picture shows but you'll just have to believe me on that one.


I sent it via the Carlos Bueno Express to SF where my sister stitched on the binding. It's been properly gifted now and she's appreciates it very much. Yay!

I'm posting this just under the wire for the Blogger's Quilt Festival. I finished this quilt to welcome a new baby into the world, here's an in process post and a post of the original fabric grouping.
I like the rolled up look of the first picture. The next one shows the whole quilt.

 The label wording was from my sister, I printed it onto fabric and then stitched over the printing.

And finally, a close up of the quilting. I did stitch in the ditch around the chains and then little loops in the blue.

The top is done and only 5 inches wider and 10 inches longer than I expected it to be. Maybe a little large for a baby quilt but she'll grow. I did manage to complete the top with only fabrics I already had on hand. So even though I had a resolution exception to buy any fabrics needed for this quilt, I only had to pick up some green and white flannel for the back. In fact, I think the border was originally purchased for the first baby quilt I made. Hmmm, that one also ended up way larger than expected.   Although why did I buy 2 yards of fabric for an applique project?

I've got the twin size ticker tape on the frame right now so I won't be able to quilt this until the last 30 or so inches is done on that. Let's see if I can talk myself into working on it this weekend. I know I'm going to like it again once it's off the frame but right now I just find it tedious. Plus it doesn't warm up out in that room very quickly.

And for those keeping track of my craziness, yes, I did consider alphabetizing the 4 center prints but managed to mostly talk myself out of it.

Happy New Year!

Here's the first grouping of fabrics for the new year. And also the first exception to one of my resolutions. First, I'd like to say it's a really hard resolution and I know this because I like to test my resolutions between Thanksgiving and Christmas to see if I really want to keep them. So effective today I will not be purchasing fabric for 2 solid months*. With the sole exception of anything that is needed for this baby quilt I'm making on my sister's behalf for one of the funniest, nicest, best Facebook updaters we know. She picked out the 3 fat quarters and I'm going to come up with a pattern of some sort. I will try to add in only fabrics from the neatly stacked, yet still very full cabinets I already have. But in an emergency, I reserve the right to buy the perfect shade of green to make the apples and zoo animals get along.

Other than that, if I am in the middle of a project and run out of fabric, I will set it aside and work on something else. Probably. I do have plenty to work on.



*Yes, purposely picked a short month in which I have a birthday which may trick people into sending me Kate Spain Central Park stuff.

Fruitcake Gifted

Here's the completed quilt for my sister's family. I used a pantograph pattern of bells and holly for the center and quilted in the whole family's names on some of the bells. Should have taken a picture of that for it to really make sense. My brother-in-law kindly held it up for me so I could get a full picture. Then he used it immediately for a nap.

I started out using 2 charm packs but then found that I needed a lot more squares so I got a layer cake and cut it into 5 inch squares. I still have a lot leftover which is nice. I did a disappearing nine patch and this is one of those quilts I liked way better in the pictures than in real life until I got it quilted up.

Here's the label before attaching to the quilt and yes, after gifting to the family. The binding was finished by my mom on Christmas Day (we open presents on Christmas Eve) while I finished the label by hand.

Really, I did the label by hand. Even the tiny binding around the words. I sure hope it lasts through a washing.
